DO LARGE, MULTI-ENGINE "PERFORMANCE" BOATS DISTURB THE TRANQUILITY OF YOUR LAKE AND DRIVE YOU "NUTS"??

If so, you have a chance to do something about it.

Today there is no accurate way to simultaneously measure the distance of a suspect boat and the sound level of its engines. MSU’s department of engineering is willing to develop such a device which will store data on a disc that will be reliable evidence admissible in court.

The research and development of such an instrument isn’t cheap; MSU estimates the project will run around $70,000. A private/public coalition is being formed to raise that amount. The ratio is $23M private, 47M public.Riparian property owners have to raise the $23,000 through their lake associations. Look at it this way: Today gasoline costs you $1.45 a gallon. Isn’t it worth 24 gallons worth of gasoline ($35.00) to get control over the noise level on your lake? The 24 gallons, depending upon the type of car you own, would take you 240 to 480 miles. An instrument to ensure peace and quiet on your lake will last forever.

A project has been initiated to develop a measuring device which will significantly improve the enforcement of the Michigan Safety Act (P.A. 303, Section 114). This device would also improve enforcement and prosecution of noise violations by snow machines and ORV’s according to MDNR’s north central Michigan law enforcement office.

The instrument will be designed to measure simultaneously the distance to the suspected boat and the sound level (decibels) of the engine. Resulting data, stored on a disc, will be admissible in a court of law as reliable evidence.

Michigan State University, Division of Engineering Research has approved the concept and will do the work necessary to develop the device.

Of special relevance is the need to bring Section 114, Michigan Marine Safety Act, into conformance with the use of the M.S.U. developed device.

The MSU project budget is $70,319. Donations from a wide base of lake associations are being solicited to show citizen commitment to the project.

ML&SA has taken on the challenge to help raise the funding needed to go forward with the production and testing of the Noise Detector Device.
